Protein Isolate vs Concentrate

Isolate vs Concentrate

Most protein formulas out there, generally will contain a mixture of mostly protein concentrate with a little bit of protein isolate. Almost always though, you’ll find mostly Protein Moleculeprotein concentrate. When you compare the two together, protein isolate is way more expensive. This is because it is of higher quality (more pure form), and has a high Biological Value (BV).

Isolate has more pure protein that is low in fat and lactose. Isolate contains somewhere around 95% protein while concentrate only has around 75%. For lactose intolerant people, the isolate maybe better because it has a less amount of lactose in the mixture.

Whey Isolate is the highest yield of protein that is available today. With the chemical properties of whey, this makes it the easiest to absorb into your muscles. All of this sound good and all, but unfortunately, there is a downside. Isolate is going to cost you. Mostly because it’s is more pure.

Now, that doesn’t necessary mean you’re going to get more out of your muscles and size, it’s just your buying more quality protein itself. Like everything now a day, you get what you pay for. On the flip side, studies show that protein isolate has the ability to boost the immune system.

The Dept. of Food Science & Technology, Ohio State Univ states:

” The results of the study demonstrate that protein isolate can significantly increase glutathione level within the prostate epithelium. This represents a potential mechanism by which protein isolate can provide protection against the development of prostate cancer”

So overall, which one should you use? Isolate is very pure but it’s going to cost you. Concentrate seems to be the staple protein that everybody uses. Most protein powders anyways, you’ll find have mostly a concentrate blend with added isolate. In my opinion, I don’t think you need to shell out the extra money for the pure isolate. Using concentrate with an isolate blend can give you great results with fewer costs in the long run.

I’ve spoke to some people at my gym and they didn’t notice protein isolate giving them any noticeable amount of gains over concentrate. For me personally, I’d go the cheaper route, but if you’re looking to get the purest form of whey protein, go with the isolate vs concentrate.
