Protein For Vegans

Often times, protein for vegans can get a little tricky. They get asked “How do you get your protein?” The answer would be that they get it from a lot of plant based foods such as seeds, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts. In the states, kids are taught at a young age that the only good source of protein comes from eating animal protein.

Now days, it seems not to be the case. The fact is, there are ample amount of plant-based sources of protein and are easier for the human body to digest and absorb. Add to the fact that, you wouldn’t get the high cholesterol content you would find in must animal proteins, could reduce your risk for health implications. Like a lot of things in this world, too much of a good think could me a bad thing.

Some of the protein for vegans can include:

- Seeds

- Grains
- Rice
- Fruits
- Vegetables

Of course they try to get as much protein as possible from whole foods, but to keep up with the demand the body puts on protein, they often supplement with a plant-based protein powders. If you’re trying to get 1g of protein per pound, this is something you must do to meet that goal.

One great source of protein is hemp. Hemp protein is a source of argine, methionine, and other branch-chain amino acids (BCAA). BCAA’s are essential for growth and repair for lean muscle. Also, edestin is two-thirds of hemp protein. Edestin is the most similar to that of the human body. Hemp is also easily digested and assimilated, making it an excellent source of protein.

Good news for all the vegan bodybuilders. Plant-based protein foods can help promote an alkaline environment in the body. A diet high in animal protein is acid-forming whereas plant protein is alkaline forming. Be careful, a diet of too much sugar, caffeine and process foods will deplete the level of alkaline in the body and we would be more susceptible to disease.
